The Endocannabinoid System & CBD

endocannabinoid system

The Endocannabinoid System is the reason why CBD works for so many health conditions

When people hear about all the different health conditions that CBD and cannabis can help with, and all of the different benefits of CBD, it’s almost too hard to believe.

How can one compound have so many powerful medical properties without having any dangerous side effects? This question led researchers to discover a system of physiology that we all have inside of us that is constantly maintaining balance at a cellular level. It was named the Endocannabinoid System because it was discovered when researchers where looking into how cannabis works.

Science now knows that the endocannabinoid system is active in everyone, all the time, from even before you were born to the end of your life, helping to promote health and balance physiologically.

This system is present all throughout the body in all the different tissues – that’s why it can help with brain disorders; various organs like the heart, liver and intestines; musculoskeletal problems; inflammatory and immune issues to name a few.

Your body is making cannabinoids all the time. These molecules function a lot like THC and the other cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp. Your body can regulate itself. It knows when to make these cannabinoids – and how to make them – to keep you healthy.

The Endocannabinoid System is your body’s internal regulator

Every mammal has an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is a control mechanism in your body essential for homeostasis (your body’s ability to maintain itself and function correctly). It helps manage many major systems in your body including:

  • Sleep
  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Memory
  • Inflammation
  • Ageing
  • Pain sensitivity
  • Cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, immune and reproductive systems in the body

The ECS has been hailed as nothing short of miraculous by some medical experts:

“The discovery of the ECS is the single most important medical, scientific discovery – ever – and will save more lives than the discovery and application of sterile surgical technique.”
~ Dr David Allen MD, Cardiac Surgeon

Your Endocannabinoid System works wonders

When the endocannabinoid system was discovered about 30 years ago, researchers didn’t really understand its significance. Gradually, they understood it as a chemical communication that the body has, similar to the hormone systems that people are familiar with. Your body makes these cannabinoids endogenously, hence endocannabinoids and they perform some miraculous functions in the body.

Basically, the endocannabinoid system is responsible for homeostasis – your body’s ability to maintain itself and functioning in the proper environment. And so it’s critically important that doctors in the future understand this control mechanism. Researchers are discovering that the manipulation of this endocannabinoid system can control diabetes, inhibit cancer, and controls whether you can survive a heart attack or a stroke. The scientific community is taking the therapeutic potential of CBD seriously and exciting new discoveries are being made on a daily basis.

And so this is critically important for doctors to understand this new science and the discovery of the endocannabinoid system is arguably the single most important medical, scientific discovery ever. More people could be saved by manipulation of the endocannabinoid system that is currently saved by surgery.

The ECS needs cannabinoids

Did you know that cannabis has been used as a medicinal plant since the dawn of human history? However, the medicinal use of cannabis gradually waned as opiates became more widespread. But the fact remains, your body is actually designed to use cannabinoids like THC and CBD. It expects them – and even needs them. Optimal health is not possible without cannabinoids.

But some people need a little help to support the ECS. Your endocannabinoid system may not be functioning at its optimal level (due to ageing, disease, medical treatment) but you can address this by adding the right dosage of cannabis or CBD.

Also, over time, ageing and natural depletion of your cannabinoid reserves may also make you  cannabinoid-deficient. At this point, your ECS no longer functions as well as it should and your body begins to fall out of balance. The solution? To replenish your ECS with cannabinoids (like CBD and THC). With your body’s ECS restored it resumes its role of bringing and maintaining optimal balance between your body’s major systems. The result for many is feeling happier, healthier and functioning better.

CBD plus your ECS equals a winning combination

The ECS is what gets your body back in balance when it goes awry as a result of illness, medical treatment, stress, modern living, bad lifestyle choices etc. CBD oil can help re-balance your body and return it to homeostasis.

Low doses of CBD or cannabis can be health-promoting and also relieve symptoms in patients. At these very low dosages, people will over time become more sensitive to cannabinoids and start getting better and better effects from the cannabis they’re using as well as start experiencing a feeling of resilience, of strength and of balance.

By supplying your ECS with cannabinoids like CBD, it can start acting more efficiently and more optimally to promote health and balance internally.

The science behind the Endocannabinoid System

Professor Raphael Mechoulam – the “Father of Cannabis Research” isolated and synthesised the main active components of  cannabis: the cannabinoid THC shortly followed by CBD. (THC and CBD are two of over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp.) He discovered that this organic compound has the incredible ability of connecting molecularly with certain receptors found in many of the cells in our body. CBD has been dubbed by some as the key to a molecular padlock. By connecting to CB1 and CB2 receptors, cannabinoids act as chemical messengers.

Mechoulam and his team wondered why there was a specific receptor in our bodies for cannabinoids. In 1992, a cannabinoid was finally identified that is secreted naturally by our body called anandamide. It was discovered that anandamide formed part of a wider system of intercellular communication in our bodies.

This previously unknown system is what we now know as the Endocannabinoid System and it is closely associated to our body’s self-regulating processes such as control of temperature, motor co-ordination, neuroprotection, pain management and appetite among others. The endocannabinoid system helps maintain the complex balance between different biological functions, a  process known as homeostasis.

The discovery of cannabinoids has opened up a new field in the research of the processes that regulate our organism. We know that some cannabinoids have therapeutic applications which make them very useful in the treatment of pain, addiction and malignant diseases.

Humans are designed to use cannabis

We have a complete, miraculous, complex physiological system in our body ready – and expecting – to receive cannabinoids to help keep you healthy. Imagine that, a state-of-the-art biological marvel that is not being allowed to do its job because of decades of ignorance, misinformation and lies that has demonised cannabis/hemp and thereby restricted knowledge of CBD.

Fingers crossed, the tide is beginning to turn as more people are waking up to the incredible benefits of CBD.

Cannabis has been part of human life for thousands of years and has tremendous properties beyond its mere recreational use. Its key role for our understanding of the Endocannabinoid System and its special relationship with the chemistry of our body makes it unique and there is still much to be discovered.

CBD can be used to promote health and to keep people resilient to all the toxicities and changes in their environment.
